There is no success without failure. There is no success without multiple failures, I promise you that.
James Carville
Hobart and William Smith Colleges Commencement 2013, 2013
La historia detrás de esta cita
James Carville, the legendary political strategist who managed Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign, delivered the commencement address at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, where his daughter would soon be enrolling. After some characteristic humor — joking that he finished college in 'four terms: Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford' — Carville leveled with the graduates about what awaited them. He pulled out a five-dollar bill and launched into an extraordinary litany of Abraham Lincoln's failures: failed as a shopkeeper, failed as a farmer, lost elections for state legislature, Congress, Speaker, Senate (twice), and vice president, had a nervous breakdown, then lost battle after battle as a wartime president — and still persevered to save the Union and pass the 13th Amendment.
