In time you will find it easy to assume that you deserve the extra cookie. For all I know, you may. But you'll be happier, and the world will be better off, if you at least pretend that you don't.

La historia detrás de esta cita

Lewis described a psychology experiment at UC Berkeley where students were broken into teams of three and one was randomly appointed leader. Thirty minutes later, researchers brought in a plate of four cookies for three people. With 'incredible consistency,' the randomly appointed leader grabbed the fourth cookie and ate it with gusto — 'lips smacking, mouth open, drool at the corners of their mouths.' The leader had done nothing to earn their status, yet thirty minutes of arbitrary authority was enough to create a sense of entitlement. Lewis told graduates that they, too, had been 'appointed leader of the group' — not entirely arbitrarily, but with enough luck that they should resist the temptation to believe the extra cookie was rightfully theirs.
