Más de Pete Davis

The most radical act we can take is to make a commitment to a particular thing — to a place, to a profession, to a cause, to a community, to a person.

La historia detrás de esta cita

Davis's entire speech builds toward this line. He opens with the Netflix metaphor — scrolling endlessly through options, never committing, eventually falling asleep. He calls this "Infinite Browsing Mode" and argues it's the defining characteristic of their generation. Philosopher Zygmunt Bauman calls it "liquid modernity" — remaining fluid to adapt to any future shape. But Davis has come to believe the opposite: that leaving the hallway, shutting the door, and settling into something is where the real meaning lives. He cites Fred Rogers recording episode 895, Dorothy Day sitting with outcasts night after night, and Martin Luther King hosting his thousandth boring planning meeting. To commit is the rebellion.
