We don't beat the Reaper by living longer. We beat the Reaper by living well and living fully.

Carnegie Mellon University Commencement 2008, 2008

L'histoire derrière cette citation

Randy Pausch, a beloved computer science professor, delivered his commencement address at Carnegie Mellon University while facing a terminal cancer diagnosis. Told the previous August that he likely had three to six months to live, he was now on month nine. When someone remarked that he was really beating the Grim Reaper, this response came to him without even thinking. Pausch told the graduates that the Reaper will come for all of us, and the only question is what we do between birth and that inevitable arrival. When he shows up, it's too late to do all the things you always wanted to get around to. This simple but powerful reframing, that the measure of a life is its fullness rather than its length, became the emotional centerpiece of a speech that moved the entire audience.
