Cultivate your circle offline — not 500 Facebook friends, but the five people you would invite to dinner. That is so important.

Groban shares one of his deepest regrets: being thrown into the professional world at 16 meant he was growing at lightning speed creatively and intellectually, but at a snail's pace socially and emotionally. He talks about the importance of balance — a concept he learned too late. His father, seeing how hamster-wheel Groban's brain was and how little he was putting into his actual life, told him to value the things that make you truly happy: friends, loves, a pet. The advice about offline circles follows: in an age of social media, what matters is not the breadth of your network but the depth of your closest relationships. 'Many of them are sitting near you today,' he tells the graduates, 'and will be close forever. I missed out on that part.'
