Coach K revealed that his basketball teams at Duke operated without rules — a surprising admission from someone who had coached at West Point and led the U.S. Olympic team. Instead of rules, he had standards: 'We're going to look each other in the eye. We're going to tell each other the truth. We're going to have each other's back. We're going to be enthusiastic. We're going to win and lose together.' The distinction between rules and standards was characteristic of Coach K's leadership philosophy. Rules are external constraints imposed from above; standards are internal commitments embraced by the group. Rules create compliance; standards create culture. And culture, Coach K had learned over four decades, was the only thing that could sustain excellence through the inevitable turnover of players, the slumps, the injuries, and the heartbreaking losses.
