Dove's third wish was for 'Uncertainty' — perhaps the most unexpected thing to wish upon a group of new graduates. She argued that the greatest gift the university had given them was not knowledge but an apprenticeship in 'the investigation of ideas' — learning how to think, how to follow a thought, when to proceed methodically or pursue a tangent. But between that knowledge and the wide world lay a host of unknowns, 'both pitfalls and bounty.' And terror — because breaking new ground is both exhilarating and frightening. The wish was that they would never outgrow that feeling: the stomach-dropping terror of stepping into the unknown, followed by the delight of discovering something new. Losing that cycle, Dove suggested, would mean losing the capacity for growth itself.
