The real purpose of arts education is to create complete human beings capable of leading successful and productive lives in a free society.

Following that dream, listening to that little voice, does not guarantee success. Luck is an ingredient not to be overlooked.

Simplify, slow down, be kind. And don't forget to have art in your life — music, paintings, theater, stains and sunsets.

There is nothing more beautiful than finding your course as you believe you bob aimlessly in the current. Wouldn't you know that your path was there all along, waiting for you to knock, waiting for you to become.

Your path is your character defining itself more and more every day like a photograph coming into focus, like a color that becomes more vivid in contrast with its surroundings.

Insist that we support science and the arts, especially the arts. They have nothing to do with the actual defense of our country — they just make our country worth defending.

You must knock on doors until your knuckles bleed. Doors will slam in your face, I guarantee it. You must pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and go back and knock again. It's the only way to achieve your goals in life.

I am a teller of stories and therefore an optimist, a believer in the ethical bend of the human heart, a believer in the mind's disgust with fraud and its appetite for truth, a believer in the ferocity of beauty. So, from my point of view, I see your life as already artful, waiting, just waiting and ready for you to make it art.

You've got to want to do whatever you want to do more than you want to be whatever you want to be. Want to write more than you want to be a writer. Want to heal more than you want to be a doctor.

Fiction reveals truth that reality obscures.

History tells us that modern science evolved from the visual arts. Observational science started with the visual arts. Galileo's first publication was not on a scientific matter. He wrote a monograph on perspective, on shadow and light.

It doesn't matter that your dream came true if you spent your whole life sleeping. Whatever happens happens now, so live your life where the action is — now.
