The Story Behind This Quote

In one of the speech's most emotionally resonant moments, Gates shared the story of his mother, who was gravely ill with cancer at the time of his wedding. Despite her illness, she seized the opportunity to deliver one final message. At a bridal event she hosted for Melinda, she read aloud a letter about marriage, closing with the words: 'From those to whom much is given, much is expected.' Gates used his mother's words—rooted in the biblical principle from the Gospel of Luke—as the moral anchor of his entire address. He told the graduates gathered in Harvard Yard that given their extraordinary talent, privilege, and opportunity, there was 'almost no limit to what the world has a right to expect' from them. It was a deeply personal call to service from a man who had built the world's largest fortune and was now dedicating it to the world's most vulnerable people.
