The Story Behind This Quote
Hank Azaria, the acclaimed actor and voice of dozens of characters on The Simpsons, delivered a commencement address at his alma mater Tufts University that was both hilariously entertaining and surprisingly profound. He built to this central insight through an extended Hollywood anecdote about two actresses who received the exact same direction from Woody Allen. Dianne Wiest, filming Bullets Over Broadway, was told her voice was too high and not working. She lowered it — and won the Oscar. Mira Sorvino, filming Mighty Aphrodite, received the identical note: her voice was too high and not believable. But after a good cry, Sorvino trusted her instincts, kept the high voice — and also won the Oscar. The same director, the same criticism, opposite responses, both correct. Azaria's point was that in the pivotal moments of life, there is no universal right answer. What worked for one person was wrong for another. The only reliable guide is your own instincts — but you can only hear them if you're calm enough to listen.
