Having a closet full of shoes doesn't fill up your life. Living a life of substance can — substance through your service.

The Story Behind This Quote
Oprah acknowledged the obvious — financial success is 'really good' and 'you can get a lot of great shoes' — before pivoting to the deeper truth. She had learned, through decades of wealth and fame, that material possessions could never fill the void that only purpose and service could address. The shoe metaphor was perfectly chosen for an audience that understood both the pleasure of a great pair of shoes and the emptiness of thinking that another pair would finally make you feel complete. Oprah defined 'substance' not as intellectual weight or philosophical depth but as the act of serving others — of using your gifts, your platform, and your resources to make the world better for someone other than yourself.
