The Story Behind This Quote

Saginaw shared the wisdom of his grandfather Ben Sherman — 'Zadie' in Yiddish — who ran a machine shop in a rough part of Detroit. When homeless men wandered in looking for a handout, Zadie would send them next door to Joe's Bar and Grille for a hot meal on his tab. His two principles — that half of what you have belongs to those who need it, and that success means making others successful — became the foundation for Zingerman's business model. That philosophy was tested in 2001 when their funding for a homeless shelter kitchen vanished after 9/11, and their business partners stunned them by taking on the entire quarter-million-dollar commitment.
