The important test is whether you can get back up after being knocked down and risk failure again.

The Story Behind This Quote

Ballard drew on his own career to illustrate that every great quest involves setbacks. His first expedition to find the Titanic ended in failure. His first attempt to locate the Bismarck failed as well. He compared these trials to the mythic tests faced by Jason, Ulysses, and Captain Nemo—each had to endure seemingly impossible obstacles before reaching their goal. The true test, Ballard argued, is not whether you stumble—because everyone does—but whether you have the courage to stand back up and try again. He described surviving storms with 100-knot winds and 50-foot swells, moments when he thought he couldn't last another minute. But the storms always ended, the seas calmed, and his quest was rewarded. His message was that resilience, not perfection, is what separates those who achieve their dreams from those who abandon them.
