People often say find your passion. But there's more to it than that. Not all passions are enough. Just existing for your desires feels empty and insufficient, because our desires are fleeting and insatiable. You need a loyalty.

这句语录背后的故事

Gawande opened his speech with a paradoxical medical finding: children with cancer often reported equal or higher quality of life than healthy schoolchildren. Research showed these kids had been strengthened by their ordeal because the hospital created an environment of purpose and connection. Gawande used this to build toward a deeper point than the usual 'follow your passion' advice. He argued that the only way life avoids meaninglessness is to see yourself as part of something greater — a family, a community, a society — and that college had given graduates that feeling automatically, while the real world would not.
