A meritocracy is a system in which the people who are the luckiest in their health and genetic endowment, luckiest in terms of family support, encouragement, and probably income, luckiest in their educational and career opportunities — those are the folks who reap the largest rewards.

这句语录背后的故事

In his third suggestion, Bernanke challenged the Princeton graduates' assumption that meritocratic systems are inherently fair. He pointed out that those who succeed in a meritocracy are fundamentally the luckiest people — lucky in genetics, family, education, and countless other ways. The only way such a system can claim ethical legitimacy is if those who benefit most also bear the greatest responsibility to contribute to the world and share their luck with others. He quoted the Gospel of Luke: 'From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required.' Then added dryly: 'Kind of grading on the curve, you might say.'
