Menzel tells the story of auditioning for the role of Elphaba in Wicked. The creative team asked her to sing "Defying Gravity" — a song with an incredibly high note at the end. She practiced and practiced, and when she stood in front of the director and producers, she thought she was ready. But just as she went to hit that note, her voice cracked. She was furious — she shouted, loudly and profanely. She fought the instinct to run. Then she took a deep breath, looked at the accompanist, and said, "We're gonna do that again." And she nailed it. The lesson: your business might struggle, your experiment might falter, your voice might crack. Some of you might express anger, some might shut down. But either way, feel it all — and then keep going.
