What is failure? If I stayed, that would be failure. I had to be true to myself. You've got to listen to the voice in your gut. It is individual. It is unique. It is yours. It's called being authentic.
Meredith Vieira

这句语录背后的故事
Vieira shared the story of the hardest decision of her career. She had achieved what many considered the pinnacle of television journalism — a position as co-anchor and co-editor at 60 Minutes. But after the birth of her first child, she found herself torn: every time she was on the road for a story, she was in pain thinking about her family, and every time she was with her family, she felt guilty about her job. When the head of 60 Minutes forced her to choose, Vieira walked away from the most coveted job in broadcast journalism. A woman later confronted her, saying she was sending the wrong message to women everywhere. But Vieira's response reframed the entire question of failure: staying in a situation that contradicts who you are — that is the real failure. Being true to yourself, even when it means giving up something others envy, is the definition of authenticity. She slept well for the first time in years that night.
