Always look on the bright side of life.
Eric Idle
Whitman College Commencement 2013, 2013
The Story Behind This Quote
Idle closed his speech at Whitman College by performing his signature song, originally written for the crucifixion scene in Monty Python's Life of Brian. The song, with its absurdly cheerful melody set against the darkest possible backdrop, had become one of the most beloved and widely recognized comedy songs in history. What made the song so enduring — and so perfect for a commencement — was its radical embrace of optimism in the face of life's absurdity and inevitable suffering. It wasn't naive positivity; it was the hard-won cheerfulness of someone who had looked squarely at the worst life has to offer and decided to whistle anyway. The fact that it was originally sung by characters being crucified gave the sentiment a philosophical depth that mere words of encouragement could never achieve. Performing it live for a graduating class transformed the song from comedy into genuine benediction — a parting gift from a man who had spent fifty years proving that laughter is not the opposite of taking life seriously, but its highest expression.
