The Story Behind This Quote

Phil Rosenthal, the creator and executive producer of the beloved CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, delivered a hilariously personal address at his alma mater, Hofstra University, in 2011. Rosenthal attributed this philosophy to Ed Weinberger, creator of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Cosby Show, who told him: 'Do the show you want to do, because in the end, they're going to cancel you anyway.' Rosenthal adopted this not just as a production philosophy but as his entire approach to life. When he finally got the chance to create Raymond, he received plenty of notes from network executives. He would listen carefully, consider them thoughtfully—and then do the show he wanted to do. The result was nine seasons and over seventy Emmy nominations. But the deeper lesson was universal: life itself will eventually cancel all of us, so the only rational response is to live authentically and pursue what matters to you while you can.
